Long Live Jesus Juice

Last night I happily spent the evening in a friend’s backyard drinking pitchers of sangria. We had fun experimenting with all of the different ways to make it. Summer and fun, colourful cocktails just go hand in hand. There’s something about the sunshine and warm air that can turn even the most devoted G&T drinker into a served-with-an-umbrella-style drink lover.

In the spirit of some of us Becker's favourite things - summer and booze - here are some cocktail recipes that may inspire you to have an impromptu gathering, or even just toss on a bikini and pass out in a kiddie pool in your back yard. By yourself. But that only happened once.

Summer Slush

1 cup gin or vodka
9 cups water
4 Lipton tea bags
2 cups sugar
1 can frozen orange juice, thawed
1 can frozen lemonade, thawed
7up or Sprite

Boil teabags in 2 cups of the water. Set aside and let cool. Boil the remaining 7 cups of water with the sugar. Bring to a boil and remove from the heat. Set aside to cool to room temperature. Once the sugar mix is cooled, add the orange juice and lemonade. Add water from the tea and squeeze the teabags. Add booze. Stir and freeze overnight. Serve topped with 2 oz of pop.

Best part: makes 40 to 50 servings!

Now get yourself cleaned up you hot mess you and throw a party. But not too many people – I said 40 to 50 servings, not 100. Don’t need to sober up earlier than necessary. Always nice to prolong flickin' on the ol' ugly lights.

Sex Wax

1 oz Bacardi
1 oz spiced rum
1 oz Malibu rum
6 oz cranberry juice

Mixed over crushed ice.

Crank your favourite song and sing your heart out. Screw Celine, the neighbours need to hear that all this time they’ve been living right next door to Canada’s next Canadian Idol.

Sex on the Beach – West Coast style

1 oz vodka
1 oz peach schnapps
Orange juice
Cranberry juice
Pineapple juice

Fill a glass with ice and pour in booze. Add equal parts of juices.

Take a snoop around Facebook and see how many ex-boyfriends have unlocked profiles. Comments: optional.

Sex on the Beach – East Coast style

1 oz vodka
1 oz peach schnapps
Orange juice
½ oz melon liqueur

Fill a glass with ice and pour in booze. Top with orange juice. Float the melon liqueur on top and garnish with a cherry.

Hey, now fire up that BBQ!


Woo Woo

1 oz vodka
1 oz peach schnapps
2 oz cranberry juice

Shake it up in a shaker full of ice.

Call up that friend of yours to propose the idea of opening a new chapter in your friendship book by becoming friends with bennies. Don’t have the number? S’okay, just post something on his Facebook wall. He’ll get it.


Nude Beach

1 oz gold rum
2 oz pineapple juice
1 oz orange juice
½ oz grenadine
Dash of lime juice

Combine in a shaker with ice, and pour over crushed ice in a glass. Garnish with a fresh lime.

And finally, Tropical Itch
(what we’re all trying to avoid this summer)

1 oz vodka
1 oz rum
½ oz orange curacao or gran marnier
4 oz passion fruit juice

Combine in a shaker with ice.
